Voith tugs have a cyclorotor (also known as cycloidal rotor or cycloidal propeller). They are particularly maneuverable and are popular when the tug has to operate in confined spaces, such as within lock gates.
The cyclorotor has a number of blades protruding down under the hull from the Voith unit. It generates thrust by altering the pitch of these blades as they are rotated.
These propulsion units are also known as Voith-Schneider propellers.
These units can either be located forward, like with a Tractor tug, or aft like an ASD or Stern drive tug.
