Tug boats are used to manoeuvre other vessels and floating equipment by pushing or towing. They are commonly used in ports and confined spaces where larger less manoeuvrable vessels need assistance. They are also often used to move equipment which does not have its own propulsion, such as barges, dredgers or jackups.
Use of tugs for coastal and deep sea towage is one of the key ways that marine construction and other floating equipment, is moved around the globe.
Tugs tend to be powerful for their size and of a strong design.
There are a number of difference propulsion types depending on the design and specific use for tug boats. Please find further information on each type on the sub types from the drop down from Vessel Types.
