As the name suggests, conventional tugs are the original propulsion type which has been in use since dedicated tugs came into existence. They tend to be either ‘single screw’, with one drive shaft and propeller, or ‘twin screw’, with two drive shafts and propellers.
There are many different vessels which use this propulsion type, from small line handlers through to big deep sea anchor handling tugs (AHTs).
